What about Meta?

What about Meta?

And now we have to learn how to use Meta … The matter is not so immediate, so it would be good to contextualize this handover which will not be fast but could change the way we’ll approach the next future of social media.

Why did Facebook announce Meta?

The numerous scandals that have involved the Blu company have forced the choice of rebuilding an identity that can distance itself from that name that has become cumbersome. Amid controversy, data loss and communication errors, the Facebook brand was losing popularity among the youngest, also starting to appear insidious for a larger audience. And… there is also an issue that Menlo Park have always underestimated.

Define your own pole

Facebook has in fact bought Instagram and Whatsapp, it uses Messenger as a separate tool, but hasn’t ever identified all of this together with a specific name. Facebook remained the defining brand under which the other portals continued to interact. The situation, on the other hand, changes with Meta, finally a specific set is defined in which all the other communication tools and others collaborate.

So, what is Meta?

Meta is the contraction of metaverse. A new ecosystem that could create millions of jobs for creators. By building a virtual dimension in which people, sitting comfortably in their homes, can do an infinite number of things. From purchasing products to attending conferences. All through its own alter-ego that will move in a 3d universe created specifically for the occasion.

What will happen in this metaverse

Through applications such as augmented and virtual reality, our home will be transformed into an ever-changing place. Materializing in front of our eyes our friends, colleagues, relatives. No matter where the latter are, we will still be able to interact with them as if they were at the foot of the nose. This will lead us to work as if we were in the office, to play sports as if we were in the gym, we will shop as if we had the shop at home. We already do several of these things, but in a two-dimensional way.

Why two-dimensional?

Because we buy the object online by reading the opinions of other buyers, but we cannot touch the products, evaluate the texture or try them on ourselves. One day this can be done, obviously linked to other processes that will make this direct experience easier. Slowly this dimension will become more and more comfortable and comparable to real life.

What are the biggest challenges this project will face?

First of all, sustainability, how to make an experience of this kind usable in a global way, trying to minimize the pitfall of having your users buy expensive tools. Because, for example, podcasts have depopulated precisely because they are immediate: you found them in streaming portals and you only needed headphones to use them. With virtual and augmented reality there may be obstacles, despite the purchase of the Oculus patent in 2014. But nothing excludes the possibility of bypassing the issue with cheaper models or tricks that allow us to use our smartphone as a viewer and reduce costs.

But also…

Transparency. The problem of being more honest with your users is not solved merely with a change of image. It will be necessary to explain well to its customers that the use of these platforms is free as long as they are willing to give up some of their data, also specifying what personal information we are talking about. Explaining how this exchange can be beneficial for both players in the field.

What does the whole meta thing translate into?

In jobs for jobs that currently do not even exist yet: it will be up to the new generations and their parents to intercept this trend and advise their children in the best possible way. Trying not to be unprepared when new opportunities knock on your door.
